Trying to remove mould safely
and properly?
Mould isn’t just unpleasant to look at – it can damage your home and negatively affect your health if left untreated.
Whether it’s in the bathroom, behind furniture, or creeping along walls, getting rid of mould safely and properly is
important. Here’s a simple step-by-step guide to help you do just that.
1. Find the Source of Moisture
Before tackling the mould itself, figure out what’s causing it. Common sources include:
• Leaking pipes or roofs
• Condensation around windows and walls
• Poor ventilation in rooms like kitchens and bathrooms
If the damp problem isn’t fixed first, the mould will keep coming back. Sorting the source should always be the
starting point.
2. What You’ll Need
Make sure you’ve got the right kit before you begin:
• Rubber gloves
• Face mask and safety goggles
• Cleaning brush or cloth
• Spray bottle
• White vinegar, baking soda, or mould cleaner
• Disposable cloths or sponges
Note: Bleach is not always effective on porous surfaces like wood or plaster—it can make the mould look gone
without actually killing it.
3. Clean the Affected Area• Open windows to get fresh air flowing
• Spray the mould with your chosen cleaning solution
• Let it sit for at least 10–15 minutes
• Scrub with a brush or wipe it down with a cloth
• Rinse with a clean damp cloth, then dry the area completely
Dispose of any cloths or sponges used to avoid spreading spores around the house.
4. Stop It from Coming Back
To keep your home mould-free, try the following:
• Use a dehumidifier if your home is humid
• Open windows regularly, especially after showers or cooking
• Fit extractor fans in bathrooms and kitchens
• Wipe down wet surfaces like tiles and sills
• Leave gaps between furniture and walls to help airflow
Keeping things dry and well-ventilated is key.
5. When It’s Time to Call in Help
If the mould is widespread (covering more than a square metre) or keeps coming back no matter what, it’s worth
bringing in a professional. Some mould problems are hidden behind walls or under floors and require specialist
tools and treatments.
Sort It Early, Breathe Easier
Mould isn’t something to ignore. The earlier it’s dealt with, the easier it is to fix. By taking the right steps, you can
keep your home cleaner, safer, and healthier in the long run.
